Character Design • Animation Collaborative
At Animation Collaborative, I learned from Pixar artists Daniel Arriaga, Dan Holland, and Chris Sasaki, to design and develop unique characters. With their mentorship, I learned the art of designing, sculpting, and creating detailed model packets for characters in animation.
Barb
The best characters are based on the people we know! Barb is inspired by the vivacious, strong willed, and sometimes neurotic Jewish mothers I’ve met at my synagogue. Her heart shaped design, reminds us that her hair is as big as her heart.
Emily
When designing Emily, I wanted to make an appealing character who was a charming and relatable protagonist. After finalizing her design, I captured her gesture in clay. I really enjoyed using simple shapes to express her spunky personality.
Albert
I designed Albert from Roald Dahl’s short story “The Royal Jelly”. To understand the functionality of this character, I created a model packet and sculpted his face. In the story, he is an eccentric bee keeper so I wanted him to share the shape and features of a bumble bee. Notice his glasses give him buggy eyes, and antennae.
