Noredink

NoRedInk simplifies the process of building strong writers and critical thinkers in Grades 3–12. This impactful platform equips teachers with engaging, easy-to-use resources that promote the equitable development of elementary literacy.

When I was asked to design characters for their new elementary school learning platform, I took on the perspective of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. The NoRedInk Mentors are made to motivate, engage, and delight students (and teachers!) as they learn how to write.

CHARACTER EXPLORATION

When I got the chance to brainstorm and pitch different designs for the NoRedInk elementary school brand, we tried multiple style treatments for branded characters. Here are a few of my favorites! You can see how we curated the designs to create our final characters from a variety of concepts.

In the design process, we tested out a whole zoo of animal teachers to see who would be the best trio for the job. We nearly chose “Harper the Hippo” to join the crew but decided Sal the Sloth was a better fit. Ultimately we landed on Red the Red Panda, Lindy the Llama, and Sal the Sloth.

FINAL CHARACTERS

I created a character style guide that showcases the final designs, describing their personalities, official color palettes, and turnarounds.

Below are some featured animations and illustrations of the characters appearing in product.

Sal

Sal welcomes her students with her calm and creative presence.

Red

Welcome to Red’s classroom! He’s the coolest teacher around.

Lindy

You might have heard, Lindy is a little whacky, but her lesson plans are never boring!

BRAND GUIDE

After designing the characters, I had the opportunity to define the 3rd - 5th grade brand book. It was a real joy to develop a road map for how NoRedInk could expand their look into a younger brand for elementary school students.

CURRICULUM VIDEOS

I collaborated with the Curriculum team, to create animated videos that teach students new writing skills. Here’s a look at a video teaching kids the difference of “Showing versus Telling” while they write.
